About fantasy names
Flowing vowels and smooth consonants create an elegant feel for elven characters. Dwarven names use heavy, guttural sounds and short syllables to suggest strength. These linguistic patterns reflect the biological and cultural traits of non-human species.
Orcish and goblinoid names frequently feature harsh stops and deep throat sounds. Each category uses specific phonetic patterns to distinguish one race from another. This helps create a sense of consistent history for your world.
How to choose fantasy names
Match the syllable length to the creature's physical size.
Use repetitive consonant sounds to imply a specific tribal language.
Combine soft letters like L and S for graceful species.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make fantasy race names sound different?
Assign different sets of vowels or consonants to each group. Use melodic sounds for light creatures and jagged, hard sounds for heavy creatures.
Should fantasy names follow real world linguistic rules?
You can use real linguistic structures like Latin or Germanic roots as a base. This makes the fictional culture feel more grounded and believable.
How do I choose a name for an orc character?
Focus on short, punchy words with strong consonants like K, G, or R. Avoid long, flowing names that might sound too delicate for a warrior.
Are these fantasy names free to use?
Yes. Use them in games, stories, campaigns or projects without credit or sign-up.
How many fantasy names are there?
The generator draws from all 1,074 names, and each click picks a new random batch.
Can I filter the fantasy names?
Yes. Open Filters and pick a gender (male or female). You can also ask for names that start with one of 19 letters. Lengths run from 6 letters (Ymrael) to 23 (Ilthane of the Silver Reach), and you can pick short, medium or long names or an exact length such as 16 letters.
Can I add numbers or change how the names are written?
Yes. In Filters, Add numbers puts 1 to 4 random digits or a year at the end, at the start or on both ends, so a name becomes something like Orin Stonebrook17.
