How to use the random team generator
Type or paste the names, one per line. Choose Number of teams to split into, say, 3 teams, or People per team to make groups of 4. Press Make teams.
Teams differ in size by one at most, and pressing again reshuffles everyone. Duplicate names are counted once. Copy result gives a plain list for a chat or an email, and Copy link saves the names so you can make new teams next lesson or next match day.
Frequently asked questions
Are the teams balanced?
They are balanced in size: no team has more than one person more than another. Who goes where is random, so skill is not taken into account.
Can I choose the team size instead of the number of teams?
Yes. Set Split by to People per team and type the size. If the names do not divide evenly, some teams get one person fewer.
How many names can I use?
Up to 1,000, one per line.
Can I save my class list?
Press Copy link and bookmark it. The names are stored in the link itself, after the # sign, not on our server.
Can I make teams of two?
Yes. Set Split by to People per team and type 2. If the number of names is odd, one team has three.
Can I choose team captains?
Not automatically. Pick captains first with the Random Name Picker, then remove them from the list before making the rest of the teams.
Can I use it for sports teams like NFL or NBA?
It splits any list of names into teams, so you can paste player names. It does not use real rosters or ratings.
Can I paste names from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Copy a column and paste it into the box; each cell becomes one line, one name.
What if the names do not divide evenly?
Teams differ by one person at most. With 10 names and 3 teams you get 4, 3 and 3.
Does pressing Make teams again change the teams?
Yes, everyone is reshuffled each time. Copy the result before you press it again if you want to keep a split.
Can I keep two people on different teams?
No. The split is fully random, with no rules for keeping people apart or together.
