    About town names

English word roots combine with common geographic suffixes to form these names. Natural features like woods, rivers, or hills pair with endings such as -ton, -bury, or -ford. This structure creates a sense of established history and grounded reality.

The structures mimic real-world naming customs found in rural areas. Short, two-syllable names provide a sense of simplicity. Longer names suggest larger settlements or locations with more complex origins.

    How to choose town names

Match the suffix to the local terrain to maintain consistency within your setting.

Use softer vowel sounds for peaceful villages and harder consonants for fortified towns.

Combine a person's name with a landscape feature to simulate historical founding myths.

    Frequently asked questions

What makes a town name sound old and historical?

Using suffixes like -shire, -wick, or -mouth helps establish an aged feel. These endings often refer to ancient administrative boundaries or coastal locations.

How can I create names for different cultures?

Swap English roots for Latin or Germanic syllables to change the linguistic origin. This alters the phonetic texture of the settlement name.

Should town names be long or short?

Small hamlets often have short, punchy names. Larger, more important cities frequently use multi-part names that describe specific landmarks or historical events.

Are these town names free to use?

Yes. Use them in games, stories, campaigns or projects without credit or sign-up.

How many town names are there?

The generator draws from all 1,500 names, and each click picks a new random batch.

Can I filter the town names?

Yes. Open Filters above the names. You can also ask for names that start with one of 22 letters. Lengths run from 4 letters (Reed) to 18 (Stony Creek Junction), and you can pick short, medium or long names or an exact length such as 11 letters.

Can I add numbers or change how the names are written?

Yes. In Filters, Add numbers puts 1 to 4 random digits or a year at the end, at the start or on both ends, so a name becomes something like Fairbluff17. Letters switches to lowercase or UPPERCASE, and Join words writes multi-word names as one word, with an underscore, a dot or a hyphen. Copy and save keep the changed version.
