About city names
Some names sound industrial while others feel coastal or mountainous. Suffixes like -ton, -burg, -ville, and -field mimic real-world naming conventions. These combinations use geographic descriptors and historical markers to create a sense of established history.
The vocabulary draws from common linguistic roots found in English, Germanic, and Latinate traditions. Short, punchy names work well for small settlements. Longer, multi-syllabic names suggest large, complex metropolitan areas.
How to choose city names
Match the name length to the size of the settlement. Use single syllables for tiny villages and multiple words for sprawling capitals.
Consider the surrounding geography when selecting a name. Incorporate words like river, port, or ridge to ground the city in its environment.
Frequently asked questions
How can I make a city name sound old?
Use archaic suffixes and older linguistic roots. Words ending in -thwaite or -bury often suggest ancient origins.
What style of names works best for fantasy settings?
Focus on descriptive compound words that highlight natural landmarks. Names built from nouns like stone, iron, or shadow create a strong atmosphere.
How do I choose a name for a modern business location?
Select clean and professional-sounding names with clear phonetic structures. Avoid overly complex spellings to ensure the brand remains memorable.
Are these city names free to use?
Yes. Use them in games, stories, campaigns or projects without credit or sign-up.

The generator draws from all 1,493 names, and each click picks a new random batch.
Can I filter the city names?
Yes. Open Filters above the names. You can also ask for names that start with one of 25 letters. Lengths run from 4 letters (Hexi) to 20 (Buenaventura del Norte), and you can pick short, medium or long names or an exact length such as 12 letters.
Can I add numbers or change how the names are written?
Yes. In Filters, Add numbers puts 1 to 4 random digits or a year at the end, at the start or on both ends, so a name becomes something like Ulmenwald17. Letters switches to lowercase or UPPERCASE, and Join words writes multi-word names as one word, with an underscore, a dot or a hyphen. Copy and save keep the changed version.
