Coin Flip

Flip a fair coin, or up to ten at once

Results come from your browser's cryptographic random number generator. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How to use the coin flip

Press Flip for heads or tails. To flip several coins at once, set Coins to 2, 3, 5 or 10; the result shows each coin and how many landed heads.

The count under the coins keeps a running total for as long as the page is open, and History lists the last 30 flips. That makes it easy to play best of three, or to show a class how the share of heads settles near half over many flips.

Frequently asked questions

Is this coin flip fair?

Yes. Each flip is drawn with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, with exactly the same chance for heads and tails.

Can I flip more than one coin?

Yes. Choose 2, 3, 5 or 10 coins and they are all flipped at once.

Why did I get heads five times in a row?

Streaks are normal with real randomness. Every flip is independent, so five heads in a row happens about once in 32 tries.

Does the count reset?

The heads and tails count lasts until you reload the page or press Reset.

Can I flip a coin 100 times?

One press flips up to 10 coins. Press Flip again to keep going: the running count under the coins adds every flip, and History lists the last 30.

How do I flip a coin three times for best of three?

Set Coins to 3 and press Flip once, or press Flip three times and read the running count. Whoever has two of three wins.

Should I call heads or tails before the flip?

Yes, say your call first and then press Flip. The page does not record your call, so agree on it with the other person before the coin lands.

What are the odds of heads or tails?

Each flip is 50 percent heads and 50 percent tails, and a coin that lands on its edge is not simulated. Past flips do not change the next one.

Is a real coin toss exactly 50/50?

Almost. A study of real tossed coins found the side that starts facing up lands up slightly more often, about 51 percent of the time. This page has no such bias.

What is the difference between heads and tails?

Heads is the side with a portrait or main design, tails is the reverse. On this page the labels are only names for the two outcomes.

Can I use a coin flip to choose between more than two options?

Not with one coin. For three or more options use the Random Number Generator, the Yes or No Wheel with Maybe, or the Spin the Wheel page.
