How to use the d&d race wheel

Press Spin for a random race from the 9 in the D&D 5e System Reference Document. The result lists the ability score increases and walking speed.

Set Show to Races with their subrace to spin Hill Dwarf, High Elf, Lightfoot Halfling and Rock Gnome instead of the plain race; their bonuses then include the subrace. Pair it with the D&D class wheel to roll up a whole character in two spins.

Frequently asked questions

Which races are on the wheel?

Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Human, Dragonborn, Gnome, Half-Elf, Half-Orc and Tiefling: the races in the 5e System Reference Document.

Why only one subrace per race?

The free System Reference Document includes one subrace for each race that has them. Others come from paid books, so they are not listed; add them in Edit the entries if your table uses them.

What do the numbers after a race mean?

They are the ability score increases from that race, for example Str +2, Con +1 for a half-orc, and its walking speed in feet.

Can I use races from other books?

Yes. Open Edit the entries and type any races you like, one per line.

Can I roll a race and a class together?

Yes. Spin this wheel for the race and the D&D Class Wheel for the class.

How many playable races are there in 5e?

The free System Reference Document has nine. Other books add many more, which you can type in Edit the entries.

Is there a printable race table?

No. This is an on-screen wheel that picks one race per spin.

Do the ability bonuses match newer rules?

They are the original 5e numbers. Later books, such as Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, let players reassign them, so check with your DM.

Does the wheel include Aasimar, Tabaxi or other races?

No, only the nine SRD races. Add any race you use in Edit the entries.

What does walking speed mean?

It is how many feet the character can move in one turn, for example 25 feet for a Dwarf and 30 feet for a Human.

Can I spin a subrace as well?

Yes. Set Show to Races with their subrace and the wheel lands on Hill Dwarf, High Elf and similar options.
